Enter a world of captivating narratives that span delightful children's stories and thrilling dystopian novels, enchanting both young readers and adults.
Sean O’Leary was born in Brooklyn, New York, into a family grounded in German and Irish roots. From an early age, he was more curious than compliant, graduating from Brooklyn Technical High School at 17 before moving west to Salt Lake City, Utah, shortly after the floods of 1982. He planned to become an electrical engineer. Instead, he became a quiet observer of the world, and eventually, a writer.
His first book, Princess and Scruffy, began as a love letter in 1988 to his then-girlfriend, now wife. Years later, after the birth of their grandson, that letter became a children’s book about courage, friendship, and quiet love. The story follows a squirrel who’s afraid of heights and a little red cardinal named Princess—who wears a silver tiara and never doubts him. Through her belief and their growing bond, Scruffy finds the bravery to see the world through her eyes. It’s a bedtime story about trying, persevering, and the kind of love that helps you climb higher.
His dystopian thriller Dan Tesson was written in the early 2000s and quietly held until the world caught up. After the pandemic, the story’s eerie relevance pushed him to publish it. Dan Tesson follows a man navigating quiet resistance in a near-future society obsessed with control. It's a psychological, character-driven dystopia that blends speculative fiction with emotional realism—for readers who question systems, not just survive them. For those drawn to 1984, Station Eleven, or The Road, it offers something more personal and human beneath the tension.
Sean is also the author of The Road of Blood: Buchenwald, a photographic and emotional account of his first visit to Germany—a reckoning with history, identity, and loss. He doesn’t chase praise or genre categories. He writes what stays with him. He lives in Utah, where he writes stories that don’t try to be loud—but do try to be lasting.
Sean O'Leary's self-publishing part of his journey began in 2022, but the ideas behind his books started long before—evident in the emotional depth of Dan Tesson, the gentle spirit of Princess and Scruffy, and the stark reflections of The Road of Blood: Buchenwald. Sean blends his engineering background with a writer’s curiosity, often turning himself into the proverbial “#redshirt” in his own work—never safe, always exploring.
A traveler, photographer, he’s a proud member of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Association (SFWA), an active part of the blacksmithing community, and a frequent visitor of local libraries where stories and sparks fly with equal magic. Sean writes for readers who want their stories grounded in truth—with just enough mystery to keep the pages turning.
He lives in Utah with his wife and family, always chasing (more like driving really) and looking for the next good story—and the best cup of coffee.
